1. Twisting other techies’ ideas
Following the tradition of Stuff White People Like or Stuff Christians Like or Stuff Journalists Like, I decided to write a list of stuff techies like. First off is taking other techies’ ideas, putting a little twist on them and making them your own. The three blogs I named are good examples, and this blog post just serves as more evidence.
2. Social networking about technology
Techies love using social networking tools to compare new techie stuff show off their knowledge of “cutting edge” technology. Techies love to use Twitter, Facebook and all of their other accounts to discuss Snow Leopard, trash Windows Vista and name off web applications and new software the nanosecond they find out about it.
3. Showing and comparing iPhone Apps
If you ever mention iPhones in the presence of an iPhone owner, be prepared for a presentation. IPhone users will inevitably pull out their iPhone to show you her or his favorite applications. If there is another iPhone owner present, in no time the two iPhone lovers — er I mean owners — will be comparing applications, accessories and whatever else it is iPhone owners can compare.
4. Tech speak
Uber techies love tech speak. Words like “workarounds,” “plugin,” “leapfrogging,” “special field lookups” and “codec.” And if you think that “leapfrogging” is a game kids play where they jump over each other, you are not a techie.
5. Tech blogs
Gizmodo, Engadget, Cool Tools, Boing Boing — you name ‘em. Techies just can’t get enough tech blogs. These helpful tools are where they learn tech speak, get info on new iPhone apps, find new stuff to write about on Twitter and Facebook and get information to write blog posts about stuff techies like.
