Harry Reid thinks Nevada brothels should be banned

Reid is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Nevada. Harry Reid, however, has been asking the NV legislature to take expansive steps towards changing laws. Specifically, Harry Reid wants to ban prostitution in the state. The suggestions weren’t very well-received by legislators. It is likely that the state lawmakers will not take action. Suggestions from Reid include stopping Nevada brothels

Congress in a joint session on Tues heard from Democratic NV Senator Harry Reid. The speech covered a wide range of topics including job creation efforts, education reform, renewable energy and home foreclosure. Reid suggested that brothels be prohibited in Nevada during the speech too though. When considering Nevada, Reid said “it ought to think about the world’s newest ideas and newest careers – not about its oldest profession.”

Truth about Nevada brothels

NV is the only state in the United States that has areas where prostitution is legal. Some, not all, NV counties do legally allow brothels. The counties that encompass the largest cities in Nevada — Reno and Las Vegas — don’t allow prostitution. Many of the smaller cities in Nevada receive significant tax income from the legal sex trade. Just Nye County got brothel taxes of about $150,000. This helped pay for ambulance services and veteran care. Brothel owners and legal prostitutes in NV supported a bill that would create additional state tax on services last year, but that bill died in committee.

Reid does not have power to ban brothels in NV

Though Harry Reid has asked for the Nevada legislature to ban prostitution, he can do little more than ask. The states have been allowed to make rules on prostitution, not the federal government, for quite some time. Reid is a United States Senator and doesn’t have direct control over the laws in NV. Prostitution most likely won't be banned. Nobody in NV legislature will probably be willing to cut off something that brings in so much revenue from taxes.
