The new grandmother insists her child is completely pleased with giving birth at such a young age. The 10 year old is resting comfortably. Neither the brand new grandma Olimpia, nor her ten year old daughter are Spanish, but are Roma, also known as Gypsies. Drastically underage marriages aren’t unusual among Roma. The new grandmother insists it isn’t unusual at all.

A story that started in Andalusia has gotten really popular. "10-year-old gives birth" is the name of the story. The Huffington Post reports that Jelez de la Frontera, who’s 10 and in Roma, gave birth to a baby girl. The identity of the 10 year old is being kept secret by her mother, Olimpia. The father is believed to be a 13-year-old male, whose name and whereabouts are unverified, but he is believed to be in Romania. He isn't dating the mother anymore. This isn't an unusual event, Olimpia says as a new grandmother. She says that getting married and giving birth is something women do young in her culture. Although underage and arranged marriages are illegal in some countries, the marriages are arranged still.

There is a phenomenon called precocious puberty, where kids start puberty early, often due to a hormone imbalance. Typically, if a female with precocious puberty gives birth to a child, the alleged father is arrested. In Spain, the legal age of consent for minors is 13, and breach of that brings charges of child abuse. In 2008, 48 of the 177 births by girls younger than 15 came from Andalusia which has the most teen pregnancies.

The Roma culture in Europe is criticized most frequently for the young age at which some are married. Recently, numerous of the Roma living in France were expelled by government edict.
