Girl Talk All Day album released for free download

The second album by Pittsburgh DJ Girl Talk has been launched. This record is named “All Day”. The DJ mix album utilizes almost 375 music samples. All together, they create a 71 minute piece of music. Girl Talk “All Day” is being launched for free and will likely spark further discussion of the legitimacy of sampling.

DJ and performer Girl Talk, Gregg Gillis off the stage, has launched his second record. He has had more than 40 tour dates a year since his first album was launched. This was launched in 2008. On the Illegal Art website, you are able to get a totally free download of "All Day". It will take you 71 minutes to listen to Girl Talk's "All Day" all the way through. It’s supposed to be one long listening piece even though there are technically 12 tracks on it. There are 272 pieces of songs from different artists on the record. It has all the pieces put together.

Legality of 'All Day' trying

There are lawful problems with testing the Girl Talk "All Day" record. In general, with permission, trying of music for a new piece is allowed. That permission is not always obtained, however, and the “fair use” of music samples has been a frustrating issue for the courts. The most recent decision, Bridgeport Music Inc. v. Dimension Films, has said that trying as little as a “distinctive” three-note riff could constitute a rights violation if permission isn’t obtained.

Application of Creative Commons permit on 'All Day' by Girl Talk

The Innovative Common permit is getting used more and more with the all-or-nothing copyright option being taken. This is a “claim and release” system of copyrighting that allows artists to allow some kind of use of their work, with attribution, remixing and commercial use as they dictate. Releasing the Girl Talk "All Day" record was ok because of a license like this. A Creative Commons non-commercial license is used here. This means that everyone has permission to use the work, as long as it’s not for commercial reasons. Girl Talk will get a ton of exposure from this. The only real concern is whether he needs to be paid for all the work that was done.
