Ratings standards for American films have stirred no small amount of controversy. The clash between directors, studios and also the MPAA ratings board has touched off fiery debate (well-documented within the 2006 documentary This Movie is Not Yet Rated), and now Time Magazine reports there’s something new to fire up tempers in Hollywood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made its stance by saying all movies with smoking in them shouldn’t be seen by young teens and children, therefore giving the movies an “R” rating.
Smoking product placing from tobacco industry illegal
The CDC study indicates that ever since 1998, tobacco companies aren’t allowed to place product in movies. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of smoking in movies today. The CDC made reports on the kids who see a lot of smoking versus those who see little. Thos who see a lot are much more likely to try smoking in their lifetime. Health troubles could get worse which is a common concern for public health officials. You will find many G, PG and PG-13 movies that have had smoking seen in them. This is why there has been the idea of changing ratings with smoking in them.
Stopping smoking other ways
In addition to the R rating suggestion, other ideas given by the CDC are to air anti-smoking ads onscreen before the start of a film and to specify in film credits that no person or business associated with the movie received financial compensation from the tobacco industry or any associated company. The CDC was not the first group to bring up the idea that smoking needs to make a movie R. The World Health Organization made this suggestion previously. Smoking in films marketed to kids and teens is socially irresponsible, says the WHO.
Smoking costs too much
Smoking appears to be costing increasingly more. Anti-smoking is encouraged by MSN Money. MSN Money explains this. Smoking costs are more than just cigarettes as it also involves the price of higher health insurance and dry cleaning your clothes to get the smell out. This means that in case you are 40 but quit smoking, you could possibly conserve in a 401 (k) over $ 250,000. Pay day loan and short term loan are needed by the numerous who determine unhealthy lungs is more significant than a nice retirement. The R-rated scene might really just be purchasing into the expense of smoking.
