The growth of Personal Computer sales worldwide has slowed enough to compel a revision in 2010 forecasts. The iPad and other tablet PCs are whittling away at 2010 PC sales and analysts expect the trend to continue. Paying much more for tablets than Personal computers this year
Monday was when the global 2010 PC sales were cut for its prediction. This is what Gartner did as a tech research firm. The Apple iPad tablet was what made the PC sales change too much. Future sales of tablet imitators riding on the iPad’s coattails are also expected to cut into PC sales going forward. After previously forecasting that 2010 PC product sales would increase by 17.9 percent over 2009, Gartner analysts now state the increase over this past year will be just 14.3 percent. The growth in 2011 of PC sales was changed by Gartner also. It went down to 15.9 percent from the 18.1 percent it was originally. Tablets are expected to displace 10 percent of total Personal Computer product sales by 2014.
The reason why Personal Computer product sales are declining
Because of the weak employment and uncertain business climate, the Personal Computer sales already were suffering before Apple's iPad. The iPad is already outselling Apple’s Macintosh computers. A Gartner analyst said that even though PC’s are regarded as necessities, the industry’s focus on increasing volume by decreasing price and quality has hampered its ability to innovate. Earlier this year, Apple CEO Steve Jobs compared the migration from PCs to tablets to the era when family vehicles displaced farmer’s trucks in the 20th century.
Are Personal computers going to be eliminated?
The hosted virtual desktops (HVDs) are also not helping PC sales. Businesses prefer HVDs because employees can use cheap terminals linked to a virtual machine running on a back-end server. With HVDs, IT departments can deploy apps and fix operating systems without having to fiddle with individual units. It’s expected that HP and Dell will take huge hits soon. This is what will take place with these changes. 85 percent of Windows on new Personal computers comes from Microsoft. The business is going to have to change things too.
