Everyone loves ‘Avatar’
Audiences love it. Critics love it. People who love 3-D technology love it. Lovers of science fiction, fantasy, space travel, romance and “Pocahontas” love it. It seems nearly everyone has fallen in love with “Avatar.” The film has passed the $1 billion mark for worldwide box office sales, and it is only the fifth movie to do that. It made instant money when it opened three weeks ago, and it has held the top spot in ticket sales since then.
Movie industry enthusiasts are using the T-word, “Titanic,” to describe the type of earning potential they see in “Avatar.” It’s an easy comparison to make. “Titanic” pulled in more box office earnings worldwide than any film, and “Avatar” has joined the elite group of films that made more than $1 billion. Of course, James Cameron made both films, so apparently he has figured out the formula for making “everyone-in-the-world-must-see-this” movies every 10 years or so.

“Sherlock Holmes” took second place at the box office over the weekend. It opened Christmas Day, and over New Year’s weekend, it made $38.4 million. Overall, “Sherlock Holmes” has pulled in more than $140 million. In third place, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” made $36.6 million.
