Are we paying for cell phones or status symbols?

While Fred Vogelstein at Wired was correct when he said “there seem to be no end to the number of innovative things a company like Google could have done” with the launch of the Nexus One Google phone, you certainly can’t poke any holes in Google’s marketing strategy.

The Nexus One Google phone is only available online, through Google’s brand new online cell phone store, which was launched on the same day as the much-hyped Nexus One. Fox News says:

“The Nexus One belongs in an emerging category of device we call super phones,” said Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management for Google. It is the first phone in a series of devices for the search giant from various manufacturers and carriers, all of which will be sold in a newly announced Google store: www.google.com/phone.

Tricky times

So before you run out and get a pay day loan and head to a T-Mobile store or any store, be warned that you can only buy the Nexus One at the Google store, and the Google store only exists online.
