Look homeward, Nomar | Garciaparra retires with Red Sox

Major League Baseball experienced quite a renaissance at shortstop when Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez all manned the position. Potent hitting, good defense and a strong nose for the game were characteristic of this trio.

But now the circle is broken as Nomar Garciaparra has called it quits after 14 seasons that saw him move about the infield for four different teams. He returned to the Boston Red Sox – the team that gave him his first shot in the Majors – via a one-day minor league contract. That way, he could retire with the team where he experienced his greatest success and pay tribute to the Red Sox nation that still loves him.

He did not directly influence it because of his play, however. The 2004 season was injury-plagued for Nomar, and by the second half he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. It was that four-way trade without guaranteed loans that brought three essential pieces to the Boston Red Sox. What would have happened if Dave Roberts hadn't been able to steal that essential base in the ninth inning of Game 4 against the rival New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS?
