Nikumaroro Island

Nikumaroro is an island in the Pacific Ocean. It is a long triangular shaped island with a lagoon in the center. It is only 6 kilometers long and less than 2 kilometers wide. There is a reef at both ends blocking entrance by most boats.

On the Island you can find the ruins of an old village but other than that, there is nothing on this island and it is inhabited. There is an old theory that Amelia Earhart landed on Nikumaroro Island and that maybe even she survived there after she was known to have disappeared. Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937, somewhere in the Pacific while trying to fly around the world. Amelia Earhart was just 40 years old when she went on the fated flight that likely ended her life. She was the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on her own.

For years, people have speculated about what happened to Amelia. But now, it's official that Nikumaroro Island is where Amelia Earhart died, if you ask researchers at the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. They say she crash landed on the coral reef surrounding the island. Although a skeleton was found on the island in 1940 that were speculated to be Amelia Earharts, not that we have DNA to prove or disprove this, the bones have disappeared.

They did find a woman's shoe next to the body, that they still have and that is a shoe from the 1930s. Movies, Books, TV shows have been fascinated with Amelia Earhart. Hilary Swank is starring in a new movie opening soon as Amelia. It would be nice to know what happened to this very brave young woman.
